The celebrations will begin on 28th July 2019, the date on which the great Spanish artiste will step on to the Arena podium to conduct the orchestra, chorus and exceptional cast of Aida, in the historical edition by Gianfranco de Bosio which, with its successful production, recreates the magic of the first opera night on 10th August 1913, when everything started for the Arena Festival.
This will be followed, under the banner of the Busseto genius and in particular of La Traviata, with a new 2019 Festival production. On 1st August 2019 Plácido Domingo will sing, performing for the first time at the Arena the most important of Verdi’s great paternal characters: Giorgio Germont, the father of Alfredo and, metaphorically, of Violetta, the fulcrum of the protagonist’s downfall and redemption.
The following evening, on 2nd August 2019, Domingo will once again be on the conductor’s podium for Carmen, an opera he has performed many times as a tenor under the baton of the most eminent conductors, such as Kleiber, Solti, Abbado, Prêtre and Maazel, and which he has directed on a few exceptional occasions.
This one-of-a-kind week will end with a unique special evening: on 4th August 2019 the stage will host the Plácido Domingo 50 Arena Anniversary Night, which will present a new production of three opera acts in scenic form, with the Arena artistes and a legendary cast alongside the world’s great opera star, performing in three different roles.
