Elisabetta

The Windsors are certainly one of the royal families that have made headlines over the years. From the time Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry the beautiful American Wallis Simpson, right up to the present day and all the gossip surrounding Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle.

Ilaria Grillini, a journalist specializing in royalty across Europe, reconstructs in this book the special relationship that all members of the British royal family have maintained with Italy, drawing on the accounts of those—nobles, politicians, institutional representatives, businesspeople, and ordinary citizens—who have had the pleasure of meeting them. Not only Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, but also George V, the Queen Mother, Charles and Diana, and more recently the young Harry and his wife, have often come to our country, visiting from Piedmont to Sicily, passing through Rome and Florence.

Starting with Queen Elizabeth’s five “and a half” official trips, the author shares many intriguing anecdotes about the British Royal Family—from Prince Philip’s lesser-known gaffes to the Queen’s disapproving glances at staff who fail to observe certain details of table etiquette, from Diana’s distant and melancholic mood during her trip to Italy with Charles to the Prince of Wales’s refined taste in wine —in a never-before-seen chapter on the history of the British Royal Family, which has always sparked debate and inspired the dreams of all who follow its ups and downs.

Ilaria Grillini has been a professional journalist since 1999. Starting in 1991, she worked at Fininvest on the production of Tg5 and later, as a journalist, at Mediaset. At RAI since 2000, she has conducted interviews, live broadcasts, and reports on current events, fashion, and lifestyle for the program “La vita in diretta,” and has since contributed to various other shows. In 2008, “L’Italia delle grandinastie,” a late-night program on Rai1 based on her idea, premiered, which she hosted for two years. Together with her colleagues Paola Pisa and Roberta Petronio, she wrote the book Romane (2013).
