Il tempo di Giacometti da Chagall a Kandinsky

From his childhood drawings and paintings to the sculptures of his Surrealist period and those inspired by African or classical themes, the exhibition spans four vast galleries centered around the core of his masterpieces. This major exhibition, “The World of Giacometti: From Chagall to Kandinsky,” is on view at the Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Verona through April 5, 2020, featuring 100 masterpieces.

Seventy works by Giacometti are on display here, alongside large paintings by artists of his time—friends, collaborators, and founders of the extraordinary Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, which has loaned them for this occasion. “Among the drawings, sculptures, and writings,” emphasized curator Marco Goldin in presenting the exhibition, “there is a common thread: that of creating, in the immediacy of the moment, something destined for eternity.”

Alberto Giacometti was one of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century—perhaps even the greatest—and has long been the most highly valued sculptor on the international auction market. This exhibition was conceived as a tribute to him in Italy and was made possible thanks to the decisive collaboration of the Aimé and Marguerite Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, which is lending over seventy works by Giacometti, ranging from his most famous sculptures to drawings and paintings. From his early years in Switzerland, with his first marvelous drawings created when he was just over ten years old, to his first sculptures around the age of fifteen, through his Surrealist works, and finally to those of his mature period.
