Discover the majesty of the Basilica di San Zeno, a jewel of Veronese Romanesque architecture and a tribute to the city's patron saint. Also known as San Zeno Maggiore or San Zenone, this church is built on three levels, representing one of the most spectacular examples of the Romanesque style in Italy.
Founded in the 10th-11th century thanks to Bishop Raterio and with the support of the German Emperor Otto I, the basilica underwent significant transformations after the 1117 earthquake, with reconstruction and extension in 1138. Completed in 1398 by architects Giovanni and Nicolò da Ferrara, the structure features Gothic elements that add to its beauty.
Outside, be fascinated by the rose window known as the Wheel of Fortune,
decorated with six statues depicting the stages of human life, the work of Brioloto. Admire the 12th century prothyrum, with its lion sculptures and bas-reliefs signed by Master Niccolò. Don't miss the high reliefs on the portal, masterpieces by the masters Guglielmo and Niccolò, which tell sacred stories from the Old and New Testaments.
The basilica's bronze portal is a marvel of medieval art,
with 48 panels narrating various subjects. Inside, among the many masterpieces, is the San Zeno Altarpiece by Andrea Mantegna, a Renaissance triptych dated 1456-1459, still in its original location on the high altar.
Come and discover the Basilica of San Zeno, where art, history and spirituality come together in an unforgettable experience.
